---------------------------------------------------

Resourcer changes

	* Added a menubar for those seeking Reshacker-like UI (you can disable either the menubar or the toolbar, or have both enabled at the same time)
Note the menubar does not expose any new functionality that isn't already (directly or indirectly) accessible via the Toolbar (except for Help Contents)
* You can hide either the menubar or the toolbar, but not both
* A context menu on the toolbar lets you choose icon size and allows you to hide or show the toolbar or menubar
* Thumbnails for bitmaps now maintain aspect ratio (rather than stretching to fill). Bitmaps smaller than the thumbnail area are now centred, rather than upscaled
* Added a Help file, access it via Help > Help Topics
* If a resource name only has one lang then its tree view node will not be expanded unless explicitly expanded
* Various improvements to the Batch Export form

Library changes

	* Fixed an issue with editing resources in Windows Vista (and later) where files with RC Config entries (listed as "MUI" resource types) could not be modified, even though the operation completed successfully
The solution has been implemented as a workaround. A more purer solution exists, but would require implementing our own PE/COFF format reader, which is too much trouble
* Fixed a major issue where icon directories lacking bit-depth information would be applied to a resource source without that information
Bit-depths are now obtained from the DIB information if they're missing
NOTE: PNG format subimage data is always assumed to be 32bpp
* You can now choose to replace icons by replacing the subimages rather than merging them. Click the "Edit Factory Options..." button on the Replace Resource Form for more details.

Released: Resourcer 0.9 (Sep 01, 2009)

---------------------------------------------------
Anolis.Resourcer - 0.9.0 Beta, released 2009-09-01

Hurrah, finally reached beta.

Changes

List View shows a progress bar when loading images and displays a warning when attempting to load so many it might lock-up temporarily. This is due to behaviour in Win32's ImageList. I'm still researching workarounds, but this shouldn't affect too many people.

VS_VERSIONINFO support

You can now replace resources, including icons, with a GUI form. It automatically deletes child-images when replacing icons, but don't cancel an icon insert operation just yet as the original images will not be restored (which will break the DLL or EXE you're modifying)

Check for Updates feature.

Association with exe, dll, cpl, scr, and ocx files. This is toggable on the Options page

The MediaViewer (aka Windows Media Player) has been removed until I figure out a workaround for not including an extra ~300KB worth of ActiveX interop assemblies in addition to x64 support.

Stuff I said that would be in 0.8 but actually isn't

Packages system. That's coming next week in a different release

Windows / System File Protection. It's a tricky problem.

Stuff coming in 0.85

Backup Original and Save As support (the UI is there but the features are half-implemented)

Minor UI improvements

This update is fairly extensive, but not without many shortcomings.

Changes

UI Improvements

Icons in the tree-view to identify types (but I feel this clutters things up)

Clicking on a ResourceType node opens up a ListView showing all the ResourceNames

Clicking on a ResourceName node opens up the ResourceData if the name has only one child ResourceLang, otherwise it shows a list of ResourceLangs in a listview

The Resource icons have been updated for uniform appearance

Add Resource form improved, no-longer freezes for a second as it loads

Replace Resource form added, but is non-functional

"State Icons" are now shown in the tree view next to Resources that are to be added, updated, or deleted

The TypeViewers list no-longer lists incompatible viewers and shows the Raw Binary viewer first

The compact toolbar now works

Minor changes to the Options form, added mention about Be.HexBox (used in the Raw Binary viewer but it has a few issues, I'll look into submitting a patch to them sometime)

Library Improvements

Support for RIFF/AVI files (this was super-trivial to implement, but adding support for the WMP ActiveX control to play the files means the executable's size grows by 336KB. I don't know of any way around this.

You can now export Icon Directories to *.ico files

A few stability improvements here and there

Support for all the BMP formats now, including the OS/2 BITMAPCOREINFO format (used in cards.dll) up to the modern BITMAPV5INFO format (rarely used, I've never seen it in the wild)

And a whole load of other stuff I can't remember doing but shows up in the diffs anyway

Misc Notes and Known Issues

This executable was packed together using ILMerge (which is why there's only 2 files rather than 9)

You can replace resources if you're careful. First delete the resource (there is no visual notification, sorry), save the resource, then add-in your replacement resource.

For some reason the icon file contained within the Resourcer executable is corrupted (the 32-bit 256x256 PNG image supported by Vista) is written to disk as a 13x13 image. I believe csc is responsible for this and is beyond my control.

Coming in 0.8

UI

Improved ListView behaviour

A command-line version that supports most of ResHacker's command-line behaviour with a few exceptions (like not supporting *.res and *.rc files just yet)

Anolis Package support (aka What Everyone Has Been Asking For). This will allow xpize and Vize to get back to work

At this point, just a GUI for installing packages, there will be no GUI package editor until 0.95 or 1.0

Full Replace Resource support

Library

VS_VERSIONINFO (aka "Version Resource") support. The data structure is a nightmare to deal with

Anolis Packages Support (using the new LZMA algorithm, which yields superior compression ratios to the PKZip (*.zip) and RAR file formats)

System File Protection Mitigator (hint: UxTheme.dll)

Protip

Did you know you can edit Visual Styles by opening the *.msstyles and shellstyle.dll files in Anolis.Resourcer? (note that saving them breaks the signature so you'll need hacked uxtheme.dll files)

This will allow xpize and Vize to get back to work

At this point, just a GUI for installing packages, there will be no GUI package editor until 0.95 or 1.0

Full Replace Resource support

Library

The data structure is a nightmare to deal with

Anolis Packages Support (using the new LZMA algorithm, which yields superior compression ratios to the PKZip (*.zip) and RAR file formats)

System File Protection Mitigator (hint: UxTheme.dll)

Did you know you can edit Visual Styles by opening the *.msstyles and shellstyle.dll files in Anolis.Resourcer? (note that saving them breaks the signature so you'll need hacked uxtheme.dll files)

Library

VS_VERSIONINFO (aka "Version Resource") support. The data structure is a nightmare to deal with

Reworking of ResourceData so you can "cast" ResourceData instances to other ResourceData subclasses as well as properly Replacing resources

Coming in 0.9 (unless mitigated)

UI

Anolis Package support (aka What Everyone Has Been Asking For). This will allow xpize and Vize to get back to work

At this point, just a GUI for installing packages, there will be no GUI package editor until 0.95 or 1.0

Library

Anolis Packages Support (using the new LZMA algorithm, which yields superior compression ratios to the PKZip (*.zip) and RAR file formats)

System File Protection Mitigator

Protip

Did you know you can edit Visual Styles by opening the *.msstyles and shellstyle.dll files in Anolis.Resourcer? (note that saving them breaks the signature so you'll need hacked uxtheme.dll files)
This is the first public release, but it's nothing too special. It's a release of the Anolis.Resourcer binaries and associated debug files (useful if it crashes on your system).

Resourcer's main bits are functionally complete, but the UI isn't entirely wired up just yet. Right now you can extract resources and add in new ones through the GUI. Support for replacing and deleting resources is already in the shared library, but not wired up yet; that will be in the next release.

There are a few known limitations:
a) Bitmap resource files using Windows 3.11 (and earlier)'s BITMAPCOREINFO structure are not yet supported. This does not affect any post-Windows 95 files, but some files lurking in Windows, like cards.dll contain BITMAPCOREINFO-type bitmaps and will cause Resourcer to fail.
b) The Add Resource Data GUI isn't fully wired up, and it ignores any custom Resource Language selection.
c) It runs on .NET2.0; maybe I'll get round to a native C++ port in future, I used C# so I could minimise development time, and Vista has .NET2.0 built-in anyway.
d) I take ages getting releases done. Blame my university degree programme's requirements to actually spend time attending classes.
e) Oh, and the Options page is totally non-functional. Don't bother changing anything, it won't do squat.

And here's a bunch of reasons why Anolis.Resourcer is better than ResHacker and XN Resource Editor:
a) Full Vista support (Vista introduces a new resource model for MUI files)
b) Full x64 support (x64 files make ResHacker crash)
c) Easier to use GUI (all-button UI, no complicated menus, yet just as functional (and way more prettier))
d) GPL licensed C# with public SVN (ResHacker is closed-source, and XN Resource Editor is under some Shared Source license and written in Borland Delphi)
